3 Common Bluegrass Guitar Terms and Techniques Megan L. Want to join in a bluegrass song circle or play on your own for fun? Guitar teacher  Matthew K.  shares the three terms and techniques youll need to know to play bluegrass guitar Learning bluegrass on the guitar is not much different than learning blues, rock, or country guitar. There are terms and techniques that you will come across in learning bluegrass guitar that may confuse you, but do not fret! Below are three common bluegrass terms that you will certainly come across while learning the guitar. Flatpicking Flatpicking is a bluegrass term that means…well, using a pick. This is opposed to using your fingers, finger picks, or a thumb pick. We have all seen a common guitar pick, this is just the term that bluegrass player have to describe using one. If you are a bluegrass fan, you understand that the majority of the guitar work is fast! Before playing bluegrass guitar fast, you have to learn the proper flatpicking technique. First, the pick should be held between the thumb and the index finger. Hold it just tight enough so it does not fall out of your hand, but do not squeeze too tightly! Make sure you are comfortable Alternate picking is the only way to play quickly. You have to play slow before you can play fast. Rushing the process will result in sloppy rhythms and ugly performance. The best way to gain this skill is to practice scales, alternating down strums and up strums on every beat. For example, if you are tapping your foot, your down strums should be on the tap. Below is tablature for a common bluegrass scale. G major pentatonic 0 02 -0-2 3 Once you graduate from this exercise, you can jump into a full 2 octave pentatonic scale. Practice it both forward and backward. G major pentatonic -03 03- -02 -02 -02 3- Crosspicking Crosspicking is a much more difficult technique used in bluegrass guitar, and should only be attempted when the player has mastered alternate picking, as alternate picking is the basis of crosspicking. This technique creates a sound that simulates the fingerpicking style, but it has a much more clean and polished sound when mastered. Usually crosspicking is done in groups of three and features a similar pattern that repeats. Again, it should be performed slowly at first, gradually getting faster. Below is a great video that demonstrates the technique. When crosspicking, you will have to learn to alternate pick in a different way. Instead of Down-Up-Down, the pattern may call for a Down-Down-Up or an Up-Up-Down pattern to your strumming. Carter Style In the 1930s, there was a group that revolutionized bluegrass music. They were called The Carter Family. The Carter style, which is a technique commonly used in slower bluegrass tunes, is still used today. The band would often play the melodic notes on the bass strings of the guitar, and the rhythmic fills on the treble strings. Meaning, the lead guitar parts are played on the low strings. This technique is very similar to crosspicking. Rather than picking the strings next to one another, your pick will be jumping from the low strings to the high strings. However this duration of cell cycle may vary from organism to organism and also from cell type to cell type. Each cell has 2 phases in its life cycle-Interphase and mitotic phase. During interphase the cell grows and prepares itself for cell division. Mitotic phase is the period of division. The interphase is the period between two mitotic divisions. It is a critical time in terms of preparation for cell division. Duringinterphase, the nucleus and cytoplasm are metabolically very active and the amount of DNA is doubled. The interphase lasts more than 95% of the duration of cell cycle. Interphase is divided into 3 phases-G1, S and G2.So the cell cycle usually includes 4 stages-G1, S, G2 and M. G1 phase: G1 phase is the first growth phase or first gap period. in this phase cell grows in size and prepare the machinery needed for the replication in the next stage. RNA and proteins are synthesized during this period. S phase or synthetic phase: During this stage DNA replication takes place. Thus each chromosome now carries a double set of genes. S phase is the longest phase. G2 phase or second phase or second gap period-it is the premitotic gap phase. During this stage the synthesis of RNA and proteins continue and cell is being prepared for the mitotic division. M phase is the mitotic phase: It is usually the division phase of the cell. The changes that take place in a mitotic phase are divided in to two stages. Karyokinesis whichis the division of the nucleus. and cytokinesis which is the division of the cytoplasm.

See what she had to say about her experience at Harvard University: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Anne: The Harvard University campus is extremely safe. I always felt comfortable walking around, even very late in the evenings and very early in the mornings. There are security guards who walk around the campus, and almost all the gates are closed in the evenings, other than a few main entrances. There are reliable, frequent shuttles, and there are multiple apps for real-time schedules and routes! The campus itself is based in Cambridge, so it is relatively urban, but I always felt very secure. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Anne:Academic advisers and teaching assistants are always available to offer help, support, and advice. Professors are busier, but they always take time and go out of their way for students. Office hours are a particularly great way to engage with professors. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Anne:Dorm lifeis quite active. In fact, it was frequently too much for me to handle! I lived in Kirkland House, which is one of the most amazing places I have ever lived. It was a 5-10 minute walk to most of my classes. The dining room was in the building, as were multiple common rooms, exercise rooms, and practice rooms (complete with pianos). The Junior Common Room hosted events, speakers, shows, and wine tastings, and you could reserve it for your own events. You could also just study or hang out there during the day, playing one of the two beautiful grand pianos! There were so many socialization opportunities with students that it was overwhelming a lot of the time. Still, one of my favorites was Kirkland Secret Santa, which was so much fun! You got to plan all these surprise gifts for someone else in the house, and everyone would help carry them out. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Anne:There is support for many different types of majors at Harvard University. However, it seemed to me that there were a lot of new and upcoming programs in Engineering Sciences and Business. I studied Biophysics because I was interested in research that applied physics to biological problems. My major turned out to be Physics with a track in Biology, which is what I wanted. The university did a great job of supporting my area of study there were a number of classes at the crossroads of Biology and Physics, as well as professors who did research on a range of topics in biophysics. Although I switched my major during my first two years (I was vacillating between concentrating more on math or neuroscience at one point), Harvard University was always very accommodating and understanding of my interests and the way I wanted to structure my time while in college. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Anne:It was very easy to meet people and make friends as a freshman. In fact, sometimes it was too easy, and it become hard to find the right balance between a social life and my studies! People were extremely eager to get to know one another, and there were always a ton of things to do on campus. I immediately met friends in my dorm after moving in, and a lot of them ended up starting their own campus groups, which I participated in. There were so many wonderful campus activities. I especially loved the Harvard Ballroom Dance Team, volunteering at the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter, working with ExperiMentors, and helping to run the Harvard Composers Association. Greek life did not play a significant role in campus social life. Although there are fraternities and sororities, they maintain their presence outside of campus, and they are not recognized or funded by the university. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Anne:The Career Center is extremely helpful and informative, and the staff there is always receptive and eager to help. The worlds best consulting, biotechnology, and finance firms recruit at Harvard Universityevery year. However, I would have liked to see more recruitment by companies other than these, as it seems that Harvard University is strongly geared toward producing Business and Finance graduates (rather than graduates in fields like research, science, medicine, law, or public service). VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Anne:There are tons of wonderful study areas around campus. In my time at Harvard University, I did not even get to visit all the libraries and lounge areas and study halls. Harvard University has the largest academic library system in the world, which makes wandering in Widener Library all the more fascinating. You can always find a nook or cranny that works for whatever kind of study atmosphere you like, or you can go to one of the cute coffee shops in Cambridge (like Crema!) and work there. There is so much space that I never witnessed any kind of overcrowding. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Anne:Cambridge is one of the loveliest cities I have ever been to. I seriously considered moving there permanently after college. I did not go out to Boston all that much, although a lot of my friends frequented the city quite often. Cambridge was good enough for me, as it had an assortment of local shops and businesses that I enjoyed frequenting. I did do most of my activities on campus, as I participated in many campus groups. However, a lot of my campus groups were tied in with the surrounding community, like the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter, ExperiMentors, and MIHNUET, which involved providing music as therapy for those in nursing homes and hospitals. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Anne:Our graduating class was around 1,600, which is quite large, but class sizes in general were very reasonable. Large lecture classes could have up to 300 students, and some of the very popular classes had even more. However, large lecture classes were always supplemented by small sections of 10-15 people with excellent teaching assistants, and professors were always accessible during office hours. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Anne:One of my most memorable experiences is working in a neuroscience lab, which I did for my last two years. My professor was great, and the lab did really amazing work. I remember staying late a couple of nights to finish up experiments, and one night I was so busy making agar plates that I had no idea that it was past 3:00 a.m.! In a way, though, I really enjoyed those nights. There is something really special and exciting about being the only one in a huge laboratory, conducting experiments that will allow you to be the first in the world to discover what will happen! This is why I recommend you learn to draw an apple.Take an apple, place it in front of you on a table, and start trying to draw it with just a pencil. You’ll need to use shading in place of colour. Before the Renaissance, painters didn’t understand the concept and most were unable to represent 3D space on a 2D medium.Many famous artworks throughout history lacked any depth. This doesn’t mean that the artist wasn’t any good; perspective just wasn’t something that appeared in art.  Now that you have the choice, you’ll probably want to learn how to use it.Drawing an urban landscape is a great way to understand perspective.  Start by making a point in the centre of your page. From this point, draw lines outwards at different angles. To the left and the right of this point, draw two vertical lines.Once you’ve drawn these lines, use them to start drawing buildings by following the lines to the vanishing point. These will be the facades of the buildings. The lines at the bottom of the page that lead to the vanishing point will be used to draw the road.Once youâ €™ve finished the facades of the buildings, you can use the other lines to make the roofs of the buildings.Mastering ColoursTo effectively use colours in drawing and painting, you need to go beyond the understanding of primary colours you learnt in primary school. You can start using secondary colours, complementary colours, etc. If you want to improve your art, brush up on colour theory. This technique involves using a secondary colour and the only primary colour that isn’t used to make it. For example, since blue and red make purple, yellow is its complementary colour.You can try this for yourself. Take the three primary colours, mix each combination of them, and then use the colour that wasn’t part of the mix alongside it. When we si t down to draw something specific, we tend to get bogged down by the details.A quick sketch isn’t about speed but it can help you to focus on the essential elements rather than the details since everything can change. You need to get the most out of each detail.Sketch on the bus or in the street. Draw passersby, the landscape, etc.  This can improve your eye for important details. Keep in mind that you won’t be drawing any of these things perfectly at first. Just enjoy it.Practise by Recreating a Famous PieceThere are plenty of things you can do when it comes to drawing and painting.  Recreating a famous painting is useful when learning how to draw. Not just because it allows you to better understand the style of an artist you like, but because it also allows you to discover new techniques.  You can also find images online or on social media.In art classes, we used to have plenty of books on different artists that we could use to copy famous pieces. In certain cases, we were tol d to pick an artist and copy their work.  However, you can’t start making money off these copies!You might want to draw on a grid for better results. Having a grid on the piece you’re copying and on your sheet of paper can help. Give yourself a different theme each week and your art will quickly improve. One thing that might not be obvious to those starting out their tutoring journey is the importance of having a folder to keep all of your credentials papers in. When you go to your first lesson with a new client, it’s best to have the following documents to show them, in a presentable format. Identification (copy of passport) Educational Certificates (Degrees, A Levels etc.) DBS Certificate (formerly CRB check) We recommend having these in a display folder such as the one below. The one that Hannah is modelling costs a little over £4 from Rymans, and is something that the best tutors on our site are using already. It will demonstrate professionalism to the client, keep you more organised, and give additional reassurance to the customer, especially if they haven’t asked to see it.
